I’m a bit of a travelling magpie. I want it all. I want the hot sand and salty skin and sunbleached hair of tropical heat. I want the mountain vistas and crisp breeze and milky winter sunlight of cooler climes.
Luckily for the indecisive amongst us, we don’t always have to choose. Enter the Pacific North West.
Okay, bear with me. I’m aware this is a region somewhat renowned for being seriously rainy. I know. However, wait for the weather to turn and this becomes a dream world.
Top of my future PNW hit list? Tofino, BC.
This is a wild patch of earth and sea, where temperate rainforest plunges into salt spray and icy waves. The surf is renowned – as are the storms.
This is a true reset-button spot: a place to breathe in the salt air and feel the sand between your toes. You can trek through the rainforest, explore the quaint little town of Tofino and get away from it all.
For a true seaside escape, my pick would be the Wickaninnish Inn. Nestled into the rocky cliffside, surrounded by tall pines and crashing waves, this luxury resort is a local gem.
Rooms feature panoramic views in every direction, with luxe touches such as stone fireplaces and deep soaking baths. The hotel is renowned for its autumnal storm watching – and with views like this, you can imagine why.
I could quite happily sink into a hot bubble bath and watch the waves crashing after a long run along the beach… In fact, this hotel is pretty high up my to-visit list right now. Oh, and did I mention the Cedar Sanctuary spa?
…Yeah. Better get there before the secret gets out.
